Hi Harry:

When you say it won't restart, what happens.... nothing?

How did the unit start to run up to cut out pressure?

When the pressure in the tank falls to normal cut in pressure, can you hear the pressure switch trip?

When, and if, the pressure switch trips, does the motor try to start and fail?

If so, and you can get pressure up to cut out level again, listen to be sure the unloader valve actuates when the compressor stops.

Unplug the compressor, drain the tank down to zero, close the drain valve, and plug back in. What happens? I need to know this to try to help you figure out what is going on with your compressor.

Cheers,

Bill

air compressor restart
by: Mario

Yes that is exactly what is going on. The compressor filld its first tank, but when pressure is running low, the compressor trys to restart and trips the breaker or power strip I have it on. What do u think is causing this problem?

Low cost do it yourself type air compressors are marginal in terms of their ability to start and run properly when compressing air if running on a 110 volt circuit. It doesn't take much of an compressor motor load increase to overload the power circuit and blow a fuse or pop a breaker.

If your air compressor will start and run properly with an empty tank, run up to cut out, stop properly, you use some air, the tank pressure falls to cut in pressure level and the compressor tries to start and pops a breaker or blows a fuse, the first thing to check is the unloader valve.

See the unloader valve page linked from the Valves section of the sitemap.

By the way, using a too-small extension cord / power trip may cause the problem too. Either upgrade to an industrial, heavy gauge, short extension cord, or plug the compressor right into the wall socked.
