Compressor trips electrical reset at initial start and on restart
2 hp reciprocating electric compressor 12 gal tank. when i first turn on the compressor, motor runs slow and stops. need to push electric reset and open the relief valve till zero pressure until it runs at speed. after that it brings pressure to 120 and cuts off. when pressure drops to 100 it turns itself on again, but the motor again runs slow and cuts out. I have to bleed off all the pressure again to get the motor to run at speed and repressurize the tank.
Bill answers...Sounds to me like the motor is "pooched", or you've got issues with the guts of the pistons or cylinders. I'm guessing the former.
That you need to reset the motor suggests to me that it's going off on "thermal overload", due to heat build up in the motor itself.
That sometimes occurs when the motor is pushing too great a load.
Can you rotate the sheave that drives the shaft into the compressor head by hand? Does it turn fairly easily. I know it turns against compression, but does it feel like something's broken in there.
If not, then it's the motor.
It sounds like you need a major repair, and if you are not up to doing it yourself, ask the store where you bought it who fixes their compressors for them, and take it there.
Sorry I can't offer more than that.
