Compressor assembled

Bill,

I bought a horizontal compressor at auction and found it to have a rusted tank. I have an upright tank and with a few modification made the switch. I re-powered with the Harbor Freight 6.5 engine as the old gas engine had very little compression. It starts runs, build air but will slow and come to a stop with the engine still running. I think it needs an unloader valve. The first picture is of the compressor, second the manifold I have the pressure gage off so I can get a new one and the last picture is of the completed project.

The compressor and manifold are from the compressor I bought at auction.

Thanks for the assist.

Randall

Compressor issue fixed
by: Randall

I bought a combination pilot, un-loader and check valve and added the bull whip style throttle cable and this compressor is running great, it unloads at 125psi and cuts back in at 90. Would have never fixed without this site....thanks Bill

Gas powered compressor
by: Bill

Randall, no I cannot see it.

When is the compressor motor slowing... what is the tank pressure?

Yes, you should have an throttle / unloader. If you Google "throttle unloader for gas powered air compressor" you will find many sources. Pick one that has the pressure range for your pump and tank. The source will have the install and setup instructions.

updated info

Bill,

when I mention the motor I am talking about the compressor slowing and almost coming to a stop the gas engine keeps running so I used the tank drain to vent and the compressor came back up to speed.

I do not know if this set has the pilot and un-loader valve combo, I'm asking if you can tell from the pictures and if not point me in the right direction to add if needed. Currently it does not have any type of speed control.

Slowing compressor
by: Bill

On a gasoline driven compressor motor the unloader adjusts the engine throttle, slowing the motor when the tank cut out is reached, and increasing motor - and pump - speed when the cut in pressure is reached.

As your motor is slowing to a stop, is the tank pressure nearing normal cut out?

Are you saying that you don't have a unloader / throttle control on the new configuration?
