compressor runs 15 seconds then shuts of and pulses

i have a devilbiss air compressor fac28. it runs for about 15-30 seconds builds up about 20 psi then stops. kicks on for a sec then kicks off. it will then pulse but never build pressure. i have changed the pressure switch, but that did not solve the problem. any help would be greatfull.

thanks

Greg, it still sounds like the pressure switch to me.

If you have the ability, can you supply power to the motor and bypass the pressure switch? If you can, when you plug in the new wire, does your compressor build pressure normally?

Or you can put a meter on the line from the switch to the motor and read the current or amperage and see what's what.

Do that if you will, and if that doesn't solve the problem of demonstrating that it's the switch, then add to this post describing what did, or did not, happen.

And by pulsing, do you mean that the motor starts, runs and then stops, or just tries to start but doesn't. If it starts and runs and then shuts off, how long does it "pulse" for?

Cheers,

Bill

well i disconnected the motor from the tank. without any load it has the same problem. i removed the cover to the motor, brushes look good piston looks good. as i turn the motor over by hand i can feel a rough spot on the armature inside the coils. i believe this is the problem. i am not an expert on electric motors, but i believe it is irrepairable.

thanks

bill,

I bypassed the switch and same problem occurred. the motor runs a while the first time, then shuts off, then starts for about a second, shuts off for a couple seconds then runs for a second then shuts off.

i do not a meter to check the amperage draw the motor has.

OK, so there is nothing else on the same circuit that's pulling power at the same time that the compressor is trying to run?

You bypassed the pressure switch and the problem persists, so we're pretty certain that it's not the new switch being improperly installed or failing too.

I'm now leaning toward a motor issue Greg.

Can you disconnect the motor from the pump, power it, and see if it runs with no load?

Keep us posted.

Bill
