Compressor Pipe Type & Size
by Tom
I HAVE A 25 GAL. TANK CRAFTSMAN AIR COMPRESSOR IN MY GARAGE. I WANT TO RUN SOME 1/2 GALVANIZED PIPE FROM MY COMPRESSOR STRAIGHT UP INTO MY ATTIC AND THEN 45 FT AND THEN DROP DOWN AT ANOTHER LOCATION. I JUST USE MY COMPRESSOR FOR RUNNING AIR IMPACTS TO ROTATE TIRES AND SOME OTHER USES WHEN I'M WORKING ON MY CAR. I WOULD LIKE TO SET IT UP SO I CAN PAINT CARS IN THE FUTURE. WHAT SIZE PIPE SHOULD I USE IS GALVANIZED PIPE OK. SEEMS TO ME THAT WHAT YOU SEE IN MOST AUTO REPAIR GARAGES. THANKS, TOM.
Hi Tom:
Everything you've asked is answered on this site already, with - perhaps - the exception of whether or not to use galvanized pipe.
Where galvanized pipe is a step up from black pipe in terms of rust particle prevention, my jury is still out as to whether or not the actual galvanized coating inside the pipe will separate from the wall and become a downstream problem.
I have contacted galvanized pipe companies to ask about their recommendations for the use of galvanized pipe for compressed air systems, and so far, not one has had the courtesy of even responding to my inquiry.
So, I'm not sure.
To be sure, consider sweated copper or Rubber/Vinyl Air Hose as a substitute for galvanized in your air mains.
As to the other questions, please use the nav bar, search boxes or site map on the site to find the responses you need. It's all there.
Or, be the first to purchase my new ebook entitled The Home Compressor, due to be finished next week, and released then. It covers all of your questions too. Watch for the release notice on the home page shortly.
Cheers,
Bill
