compressor operates intermittently

When starting from zero the unit would charge to max.,i.e 125 psi and shut off as expected. But when the pressure reached 90psi the motor sputtered and would not restart and the circuit brkr popped. But if I bled the tank to zero the compressor charged up to normal max pressure but it would not automatically restart. I replaced the compression switch but things did not change. Also when the motor did cut off air was expelled as expected.

From zero PSI, your compressor runs perfectly up to 125 PSI and stops at the normal cut out pressure level?

Then, you start using air, the pressure drops to 90 PSI, and this is the normal cut in pressure and your compressor tries to start at that pressure, is that correct?

If it were my compressor, and these summaries are correct, I would replace the pressure switch, and make doubly sure that it was wired correctly.
