Compressor doesn't hold pressure

When I turn on switch, compressor builds to 140psi, then motor shuts off, air starts exiting through the in line connection, not the relief valve. Air pressure drops to 100psi and compressor kicks on until 140ps again, and again and again. Compressor doesn't hold pressure at 140psi when no air is used. Compressor would keep cycling until it blows a circuit breaker after about 15 cycles.
