Compressor does not idle down once tank reaches pressure
Compressor will sporadically run with no relation to tank pressure. It rarely idles down.

Bill says...I don't have a lot of info to go on here. I suspect that your air compressor is gas powered?
That being the case, what happens when the pressure in the system reaches the cut out level, your pressure switch will signal to the throttle mechanism to slow the motor down.
If that isn't happening, I would suspect the throttling control, particularly as you indicate that the problem is intermittent.
