Compressor blows breaker(s)

by Eric
(Oregon)

I have a 60 gallon tank with a 5 hp motor on it plugged into a a 220 outlet.

Whenever the compressor is turned on the motor tries to turn over and does so however it struggles, then trips the breaker.

I tried draining the tank and turning the compressor on and it ran for about 30 seconds then tripped the breaker.

The compressor is in our barn wired to the breaker in their, that barn breaker is wired to the main house breaker and will blow a switch in it killing all power to the barn. Confusing??

Thanks for any help!

If this were my air compressor exhibiting these symptoms, and assuming they are new, I would check the start / run capacitor, or both, if there are two.

If you get that done, you might as well have the motor load tested too.

Cheers,

Bill

At present, at an electric motor rebuild shop. Get a load test on the motor too. One day, maybe soon, I'll have step by step instructions, but haven't got the info yet.
