compressor blows breaker - motor will run after I empty the tank

The motor will run after I empty the tank but only build about 20 psi and then the motor seems to labor more and trip. I put a new run and start capacitor on and still the same results. If I do not empty the tank it will trip a breaker after abot 5 seconds.

Larry, the compressor motor runs on an empty tank as there is little load on it. As the tank pressure begins to build, there is backload on the piston, and ultimately on the motor itself.

Good though to re & re the capacitors, as that is often the culprit.

In order of complexity, I would try the following:

  1. make sure the unloader valve works

  2. empty the tank, pull and clean the tank check valve

  3. dismantle the pump head inspect, and clean or replace, the intake and pressure valves

This is me assuming that there is no evident mechanical issue in the power train?

Maybe you can post a comment and let me and all others know how it turns out?

Cheers,

Bill
