Compresser pump smokes - smoke blowing out intake filter

I have a 60 gallon Sears belt drive air compressor. It appears to work fine and builds up to 140 PSI. But at about 125 or so it starts blowing smoke out of the intake air filter which is also getting into the tank. When using the air I cannot see the smoke coming out of the tank, but I can smell it.

If the pump is smoking, you've got enough heat build up to burn something.

My guess is that the pump is so hot that it's burning the lube oil.

Smoke blowing out of the intake filter tells me that your intake valve(s) have or are failing.

The high heat may mean insufficient lube, a pump failing, heat transfer from an overheating motor, it's impossible to say exactly what without seeing the compressor in operation.

Cheers,

Bill

Thanks Bill, I think you've confirmed my suspicions. I too think the intake valve(s) is / are failing which is also probably why it's over heating (taking it a lot longer to build max pressure). As far a lube goes, I've checked and changed the oil several times so I don't think it a lubrication issue. As far as the smoke goes, I'm sure it is the lub oil. I guess it's time to yank off the head for a real look see.

You are very welcome. And best of luck. Maybe post back on this thread when you are done to let others know how successful you were?
