The discharge air from the pump to the compressor tank can get really, really, not. Which is why that line is usually made of metal.
If the discharge hose to your air tool is getting too hot to touch, you must be running the compressor flat out and it's overheating. I'm surprised that it's still running.
Not to mention how much water is flowing down the air line too, since the air hasn't a chance to cool, and it's full of water vapor.
Or... you are using the compressor in a really hot environment, and the heat is ambient.
