CLARKE Model# AC2003B Rebel Air compressor

CLARKE Model# AC2003B Rebel Air compressor purchased in 2009, never used still in original box. I

Added oil, and attached the oil breather cap, Air regulator, air chuck and air filter.

Followed the start up procedure for first time use. Switched compressor on, ran for about 5 seconds than began to slow down until it stopped.

Waited and tried to start it again, same result. Some smoke coming from crankcase but nothing major, could be grease burning off motor. Not sure what to do next.

Does the tank pressure gauge register any change in the few seconds the compressor is working.

If the power supply is good and clean and not through an extension cord or power bar, and assuming that factory lube hasn't completely dried up and glued all parts together, my first thought is that the run capacitor is failing.

Haven't ever taken one of these compressors apart, so I don't know if it has a dual cap or two separate (start and run) caps, but it were my air compressor, I'd find the page on this site about how to test them and make that my next check.

Capacitor Check
by: Brian

Thanks Bill,
Compressor does build up pressure for the short time it runs. This model has a start and run capacitor. Both tested good using your capacitor help page check. I got ambitious and removed both capacitors which are wired to a centrifugal switch. The switch appears to be burned out (source of smoke). Will order a new one.
