CH air compressor runs then stops and after it cools it will run fine

by zach

I have a ch model wl660700aj 30 gallon with 5.5 hp motor. The problem I have is it runs great until it gets to 50lbs and it will shut off, I can turn the switch off and wait for 5 minutes and it will run to 75lbs. It will stop every 25lbs up to 125 when it kicks off. I don't understand why it does this start and stop up to 125.

Zach, this is what I think is happening.

Under light load your compressor runs fine, though there is a problem developing with the pump or the motor.

When the load increases - the tank now has air in it and the motor has to work harder - that problem manifests itself in motor heat, the motor thermal overload trips, and the compressor stops.

You wait for it to cool, and start the motor again. It's cool enough to run for the next 25 PSI again, yet now it's working harder, and it trips on thermal again, and again, and again.

I have to tell you that whatever is going on in your compressor, and my guess is that it's the motor that's going, it's not doing it any good to keep running it to thermal overload.

It were me I'd pull the motor and take it to an electric motor shop for assessment.

Cheers,

Bill

PISTON PUMP runs really hot!!!
by: JOHN

The COMPRESSOR PUMP where the piston is, is running sooo hot that the overload switch is attached right on the pump and motor housing itself that the pump housing transfers heat and kicks the overload out for the motor "AFTER" the motor has reached max pressure! The motor of course won't start again when the pressure drops unless I reset the breaker! It is an oil type and have changed the oil, and cleaned the intake filter. The motor will run all day with the crankshaft removed! Is there maybe something up with the piston pump not getting enough oil or?

Same Problem Here

I'm confused. Did you have to replace the motor and pump or just the pipe from the pump to the tank?

I have done some searching and it seems the motor and pump are one unit. The way it seems there are no rebuild kits just the one unit with pump and motor. The price isn't to bad at $114 plus about $10 shipping. I thank you for your help. I have replaced the pipe that runs from the pump to the tank and it will go to 150 now everytime. Lesson learned I won't buy anything without thinking again.

My compressor is a single stage oiless pump design, its max pressure is 150 not 125 as I had thought. I bought it used a few days ago. But I had it to run to 150psi 1 time and that is when I took the plastic cover off of the pump and motor. I'm not new to compressors I have just never had any issues before with one. My pump seems to run really hot. I was sweating today and a drop hit the pump and it sizzled,I know pumps run a little hot but do they run that hot? I just wanted to give the new info.

Same advice Zach.

It were me, I'd take the motor off and get it into a local electrical motor rebuild shop. Ask them to test it to see if it has a problem.

Cheers,

Bill
