Compressor will only build up to 85 psi then shuts down and recycles. Where is pressure switch located? I don't see it listed in the manual! Could that be the problem? thanks!!

Larry, in the image I have uploaded, the pressure switch is the black box on the left of the pump.

Using your multi-meter, when the compressor stops at 85 PSI, determine if power is flowing through the switch to the pump.

If power is flowing, then it likely isn't the switch. If power is not flowing, that is, the pressure switch has shut off at 85 PSI, then it's likely the switch is failing, unless it was adjusted incorrectly.

Tom, I think your motor is overheating as a result of the increasing load of the air in the tank.

You indicate that it runs fine with no load.

There are a number of reasons for this including running a compressor with a too small extension cord, impeded intake air filter, intake valve or more likely pressure valve failing, the tank check valve is not working properly, mechanical failure of the pump or the motor.

I don't have sufficient information about your compressor to help you to the likely culprit. See the sitemap page and look under troubleshooting for pages with more tips.
