Pressure Switch - Can I run two legs of my 3 ph power

by Al McDaniel
(Newark, Oh)

Hi Bill,

You helped me with my check valve question and I am hoping that you can help me with my pressure switch question.

I forgot to order a Mag Switch for my compressor and I need to get it up and running temporarily.

Can I run two legs of my 3 ph power through the pressure switch to get up and running while I am waiting on the Mag Switch to in?

Thanks,
Al McDaniel

Al, I don't know. The electrical side of higher voltage power is outside my ken.

However, your question is posted in electrical troubleshooting, and I hope someone will respond to you soon.

Cheers,

Bill

Dwight, what is the normal cut out pressure setting for your compressor? If the setting on the new pressure switch is higher than the PRV relief pressure, then the PRV is going to let go before the pressure switch "sees" the cut out pressure level.

You may be able to adjust the settings on the switch to lower the cut out pressure to below the PRV release pressure, though, 125 PSI seems low.

More info on your switch here:

Pressure switch for a automan direct drive 5 HP. single stage 230 volts 80 gal. tank (single phase)

by Walter
(Toledo,Ohio USA 43615)

The compresor itself runs fine however it will continue to run whereby causing the pressure relief valve to blow and I have to shut it down manualy. The points in the pressure box are burnt/pitted pretty good and I believe this to be the problem. However I don,t know if I can just purchace the contacts seperatly or if I should replace the entire box??? and where would be best bussiness to make this purchase/what should I expect to pay for the part?

Yes Walter, from the sounds of it your PRESSURE SWITCH is pooched.

Dump the air, pull the power, remove the switch (making sure you label the wires as to where they were originally attached) and take the switch with you to the compressor / hardware store.

Make sure that if the present switch is toggling the unloader valve, that the new one you buy is similar in function.

I'm guessing somewhere between $25 and $50 should get you a new switch.

Cheers,

Bill
