Campbell Hausfeld air compressor is slow to build pressure

by tom wilhelm
(pataskala ohio)

50 second cycle to build 120 to 150 psi and low cfm. 7.5 hp 80 gal 2 stage pump

If the air compressor is taking longer to the fill than normal, typically it is a seal problem, a gasket failure, an intake or pressure valve failing.

See the pages about these linked from the troubleshooting section on the sitemap page for more info.

Slow Recovery on Campbell Hausfeld air compressor

by Pete Morgen
(Lincoln University, PA19352)

Slow Recovery on VT627505AJ L5/5/09-00114 VT470000AV

My compressor takes 4 minutes 22 seconds to recover from 95 psig to 140 psig. Is that slower than expected?

I use clear synthetic compressor oil that I purchased from a local compressor/fastener/nailer dealer. Why do you ship the machine with the fowl smelling animal oil in the compressor?

The machine is only 4 years old. I never spray paint with it. I occasionally run air tools. I suspect I might have left the animal oil in the machine too long initially. Should I plan on replacing the rings & gaskets? Thanks.
________________
Question 1) That seems to be quite a bit longer than it should, Pete.

2) I don't ship them with "fowl smelling animal oil in the compressor" as I don't ship compressors at all.

3)The condition of the gaskets / rings / valves changes over time and amount of use. I doubt very much that the cause is "I might have left the animal oil in the machine too long initially" but I suppose it might be.

See the page in the troubleshooting section about the many reasons why an air compressor will run and not build pressure for some tips and checks to help diagnose your compressor problem.

Campbell hausfeld runs slow labors and knocks out the breaker

by David D
(Oshkosh Wi. USA)

Campbell hausfeld runs slow andlabors and knocks out the breaker at times

Campbell hausfeld
mod#VA500000AJ
pump VT272200JY
comp motor# LR22132
not sure what to do first
took belt off spins good
when pump connected seems to labor but will work after a couple of starts
not sure where check valve is
haven't changed oil yet

When the compressor is laboring David, it's telling you that something in the power train is in distress.

First question is has anything changed in the using conditions... power supply etc?

If no change in conditions then the change has taken place in the compressor, assuming that it worked fine before in the same using conditions.

Assuming that you have read the information in the troubleshooting section on the sitemap page about why compressors pop breakers, then my thoughts are that it may be the run cap that's the problem. Check that out and drop us a comment here to let us know what the results were.

Cheers,

Bill

Cambell Hausfeld 5hp compressor starts to labor as it fills

by Don
(Grasonville, MD)

cambell Hausfeld 5hp 80 gal four cyl cast iron pump purchased 8/2010

my compressor runs fine then starts to labor, then runs fine again. Whats the problem? It labors after running at top speed for about 30 seconds....then it gets through this labor spot and gets back up to speed....the belt starts to chirp as its laboring.

It repeats this cycle throughout the pressure build up. switch set to go on at 80 off at 120. Does it at all pressure readings during build up.

Don, this is a new problem, and there has been no change to the power supply?

In least complex to most, I suggest you...

  • check the intake filter media

  • with empty tank remove, clean and replaced the tank check valve

  • do a run capacitor check - see how on this site

  • get the electric motor load tested

  • tear down the pump and examine the intake and pressure valves for damage - repair as necessary

These are the things that come to mind. If any of these resolve your compressor laboring problem, please post a comment here to let us know which one(s) it was.

If this doesn't resolve it, please also post that here, as that will be important info for all.

Cheers,

Bill

The power supply has not been changed and has been tested. The motor is fine and been tested. I am going to clean the check valve and just ordered and new pressure switch with unloader. I think the problem is in one of these two components.....Also, the oil has been changed in the pump with some Lucus additive put in. Ill let you know....
