Briggs and Straton Pro Series won't go above 40 lbs and motor continues to run.

I have a Briggs and Straton Pro Series 6 gal compressor, model074008. It will start up and reach 40 psi , then continue running , but the pressure won't rise. I've tried adjusting the pressure control knob both increasing and decreasing it, but it remains constant at 40. I noticed the rubber gasket at the check valve was protruding out and I tried to replace it with an "O" ring from an Auto shop..but it still runs and only reaches 40 psi. I'm very hany and will try anything to avoid having to take it intp the shop. Please Help...
