Bostitch 6 gal. Pancake backfiring @ 140+ PSI

I have the previous model Bostitch 6 Gallon with the Brad nailer combo. Everything works great on my compressor till it hits 140 psi. At 140, it begins to sound like it's backfiring on every revolution, and progresses in volume through 150 when it shuts down. I took the cover off and gave it a once over cleaning the air filter and checking everything in my knowledge. Please help!

I take you mean it's making a popping noise - sounds to me like your piston ring is about shot.

Since I don't know how an electric air compressor motor can backfire, do you think you might provide a bit more information about what you mean by backfiring?
