black max has air leak and excessive heat

black max 27 gal upright -The air pres. won't adj. (has new adjuster), slow leak though the ad. knob. The tank itself gets warm and the valve that adj. knob is mounted on get very hot. It has no problem building air.

Adjuster / Regulator

I agree with Doug when he says "bad check valve and a backwardly installed regulator, if that's what you called the "adjuster"." except that I don't think you've installed the regulator backwards (replacing the knob wouldn't have done that) but I think that the regulator diaphragm is cracked and leaking.

If air is leaking all the time when the compressor is stopped, then it's got to be coming from the tank, and that means that the tank check valve is leaking.

this is a 2 nd hand compressor. The only part I've replace was the powermate (S137-0001) knob that sits on top of regulator.

Sounds like your problem is a bad check valve and a backwardly installed regulator, if that's what you called the "adjuster".
