Bigger motor and pulley on Sanborn pump?

by Charles Durfey

I bought older a 5HP 60 GAL Sanborn--500B60V and want to know if I put a bigger electric motor, say 6 or 7HP, and put a larger diameter pulley on the motor if I would get more CFM. Would it hurt the pump? I would not increase the pressure shut off limit of 125lb.

What is the max. RPM of the pump?

Yeah, that's pretty much maxed out. Maybe if you happened to trip over a slightly larger motor pulley and/or smaller pump sheave you could go the 1200, or maybe even 1210 or so, but I wouldn't spend any money on it.

Oh, I did get a great deal on this, a girls father passed away and he had a nice shop so she sold this cheap, and I got a new filter/dryer in box that sells for 239.00 with it all this plus a 2hp 10 inch grinder and 1 hp drill press for 300.00 for everything so this why I have this compressor now

I checked the motor now and pully size and it comes out 1150 rpm at the pump now. Motor turns at 3450 and a 4 inch pully and air pump pully at 12 inch, So I dont know if adding couple rpm with higher HP motor would be worth it or will hurt the pump? I THINK not sure max rpm of 165 pump is 1200? hope this helps??

The info necessary to answer your question is readily available, but I can't do the the math, 'cause you need to figure out the current rpm of the pump as it is.

Have fun.
