Atlas Copco GA7 noise at air-end, run until it fails?

by Daniel

One of our GA7 units is making a growling noise at the air-end.

The noise changes pitch depending on if it is loaded or unloaded.

It is still making air OK and there are no alarms.

The noise sounds like a bearing going out in the air-end. Should we take it out of service or run it till it drops?

Airend?
by: Carl

Take off the belts, turn the motor to see if the noise is coming from them that first, its hard to hear if its motor or airend on those machines.

The motor should spin freely, the airend is harder to turn but check to feel if the airend has any flat spots.

Also, you can check if the noise is coming from the airend or motor by very carefully placing a long screwdriver against the motor bearing when running then push your ear against the handle of the screwdriver and listen if its sounding rough.

Do the same with the airend bearing but be careful with the spinning pulleys with loose clothing.

air-end growl

I'd just say this:

Bearings are cheap.

Screws are expensive.
