atlas copco ga55 tripping main breaker randomly

by Doug
(Rock Hill SC USA)

My GA55 is tripping main breaker when it starts-up from the unit going to stand-by stoppage for low demand.

It's random, may not trip for month, may do it three times in a week.

The GA55 will start-up using the same contactors after the power lost and run like nothing was happen, and will continue to run 24/7 until the next stand-by for low usage or no demand time outs.

All the contacts for new.

Amps are all normal when running. Star amps are good during start-up, I don't see any other contact pull in during this period.

Programming/software? Timing too slow during Star to Delta?

Type of breaker?
by: Carl

What type of breaker do you have? Im not sure if the types of breaker are the same where you are?

But here in the UK we have B type breakers (for normal use on lights, sockets etc.)

But when it comes to some air compressors like large screws, we use C type breakers which basically don't trip straight away, because the load on the motor when starting under pressure is greater than when not.

As yours is starting to trip randomly, I'd guess that it is getting old and maybe weaker. I'd have a word with your local electrical wholesaler to see if you can have it replaced.

Hope this helps.

Timing...?
by: Doug in s.d.ca

Maybe.

I'm inclined to think there may be a problem with incoming power. Do you have the means to monitor it?

GA55 starting problems

by Graham Wilson
(Mozambique)

I am seeking technical guidance regarding the difficulty of starting up a 55KW Air Compressor running using a 150KVA Generator, details as follows:

GENERATOR

FG Wilson model P165 Prime Power diesel generator rated at 120KW 0.8PF 400 Volt 50Hz.

COMPRESSOR

Atlas Copco model GA55 FF Rotary screw compressor with VSD. Motor rating is 55KW, 119A flc at 400 Volts.

There is an additional base load connected to the generator of maximum 60KVA mixed inductive loads.

The main issue being that the compressor is factory fitted with a Star/Delta starter. The resultant high value starting current causes the generator to overload and at times, stall. I am seeking advice on a solution to the problem.

Kind regards

Graham

I look forward to hearing from you.

You will always have problems trying to run a variable speed with a generator. The current from the generator is so unstable that it wont work as the invertor needs a steady flow with no peeks or spikes. There is a solution though, you can get a filter to even it out, but they're pricey!

Some ideas
by: Doug in s.d.ca

Not much you can do:

A bigger generator

A separate gen for either the other stuff or the compressor

Shut down some or all of the other stuff while the compressor starts (could be done automatically)

( Surprised it ever starts )

You might be able to rig the comp so it never stops so the VSD ramps up more gradually...

Changing Oil Seperator
by: Mike

GA55+ requires the following service:

First service occurs at 4000 hours - replace oil, oil filter, air filter, cabinet filters, clean coolers and dryer condenser if full-feature unit

Next service is at 8000 hours - replace oil, oil filter, air filter, cabinet filters, air/oil separator. install unloader valve kit, minimum pressure valve kit, oil stop valve kit and check valve kit, clean coolers and dryer condenser

Basically, once per year you install a 4000 hour kit and every 2nd year you install an 8000 hour kit

(Thanks for the good info, Mike - Moderator)

separator

Usually, it's done on hours of operation.

So, depending on long it's on during the two months, that might be OK. Depends on what they look like coming out.

Separator change
by: Carl

Hi,
I have been an air compressor service engineer for a around 20 years and have, serviced, repaired and refurbed these compressors for a long time.

If your service provider is changing the separator every 2 months!!! You desperately need to change to someone who is not ripping you off!!

The absolute minimum that the separator needs to be replaced is every 4000 running hours or every 2 years (which ever comes first) unless there is a fault with your compressor.

Anyone who tells you different is just trying to get money out of you as separators are expensive.
