Airbrush cuts off and on - pressure drops from 60psi to 20psi

I have an Airbrush Depot TC-20 compressor. When I turn it on it will run for a few seconds then cut off after several seconds it will cut on again. It will do this over and over as long as it is on. I have the pressure turned as far as it will go and only get 60psi and when I press the airbrush trigger it drops to 20psi. I am pretty sure these two problems are related

turned psi down
by: Bill

Dennis, if this is a new problem, have you ever cleaned the element inside the air filter?

This compressor issue appears to relate to flow, so if the filter element is clean, then it points to the regulator itself as being an issue.

Pull the combo filter - regulator and connect your Badger Crescendo 175 directly to the output on the compressor, not to paint with, but just to determine the result. Will the air flow be constant when you depress the paint gun trigger, or do you get the same symptoms. You will have to plug the paint supply port, of course.

turned psi down - still same problem
by: Dennis

The air brush is a Badger Crescendo 175 - couldn't find the specs but when the trigger is pushed the compressor stays on but I can't get more than 20 psi. I turned the pressure way down (still get 20 psi out of the air brush) and now the compressor runs for a few seconds and cuts off at about 35 psi. The compressor is idle for several seconds a starts again but now cuts off again much sooner at the lower pressure setting.

I can start taking the compressor apart but I really don't know what I am looking for to fix.

on-off-on cycling

If I'm reading you right, this happens even when you are not using air?

Then you have a leak - possibly a bad check valve.

Airbrush Depot TC-20 shuts off
by: Bill

Hmmm, according to the specs Dennis, your air compressor is set to shut itself off when the pressure reaches 57 PSI.

"Automatic On/Off Shutoff: Preset for automatic turn off when air pressure reaches 57 psi. Preset for automatic turn on at 43 psi. This enables a longer compressor life from less motor wear and heat-related moisture."

I cannot tell from your post if this is a new issue you are experiencing with your Dept TC-20 or it's always done this.

Know that your compressor has this flow capacity "Air Delivery: 25 ltrs/minute; 0.8 cfm @ 57 psi" and if your air brush flows greater than that, then the output pressure will drop very quickly, as you will be using more air than the compressor can generate.

Do you know the flow requirement of the paint gun?
