air fitting conection

I bought a 1/4 inch (F)NPT, and when I went to connect my hose the fitting on the house would not mate all the way.

I heard that there is a long and a short size for the male coupler. How can i tell which one i have?

Not only are there long and short connectors, but they also come in different sizes and shapes.
