humms, but no start...?

10 gal.brute Compressor made by briggs and stratton 125 psi 2.5 hp running

A humming motor suggests a power problem.

If you empty the tank to zero PSI, will it start then?

If you are using an extension cord, try plugging the compressor right into a wall socket without the extension.

Any change? Please post and let us know.

Bill

Compresser not starting?

by Tim
(Warrenton Oregon OR 97146)

Hi Bill, Thank you for getting back with me so soon.

The problem I am having is even when I let all the air out the more still will not start.

I have to un hooke the medal line that hooks to the air compresser. I than have to turn the motor with the fan attached to the end of the motor. If I spin it real fast the motor will start. I did check and I am getting power to the motor. I tried to plug the compresser in right by the fuse box which I know is a 20 amp breaker. I hear it try to start but after a few seconds I hear a relay click of and on. I hope that I can fix this beast. The compresser was made in China and the company is out of business. Thanks for all the help you can give me. Tim

Tim, based on what you've said, my guess is that you either have a start capacitor problem, or the motor itself has a problem.

See the page on this site about testing your capacitors first to see if that is the problem.

When you tested the caps, what did you find?

Bill

Fred, I note that this compressor was once sold by Abac Compressors, but other than that, I can find no specs on it.

To help me help you, please provide the motor HP and tank size.

Thanks,

My compressor shuts off at 70psi. needs starting several times ...

by Ara
(Orange county USA )

My compressor shuts off at 70psi. I have to turn the switch off for 20 sec and then back on it firs up for another 30psi. Have to do this several times to bring it to 150 psi. What is the problem?

Ara, if the compressor shuts off at 70 PSI, and you use a multi-meter to check and see that the power has actually stopped flowing from the pressure switch to the motor circuit, and if there is power flowing into the pressure switch from the plug side, then I would say that you need a new pressure switch.

Cheers,

Bill
