Pull the plug, James. Drain the tank to zero.

Put a multi-meter on the line from the pressure switch to the motor. There should not be any power there with the compressor unplugged.

Close the tank drain and plug the compressor in. Observe the multi-meter. It should show power flowing to the compressor motor.

If the compressors shuts off after a few seconds, does the power feed to the compressor motor disappear as well?

If so, you likely have a failed pressure switch.

If the power to the motor continues, which I doubt, please post here as a comment, and we'll pursue a solution further.

Bill

compressor starts find. at about 80psi it stops.

compressor starts find. at about 80psi it stops.a few seconds later it will try to start but the motor strains to start several times then when it does start runs for a while then does the same thing again until tank is full. Pressure switch? Can't find parts for this Task Force Model 223844. Approximately 5 years old and has done this since new. Floor model as is!

For a cost of about $25 or so, replacing the pressure switch might be a cheaper way to help diagnose the problem than taking it to a shop.

Is this the compressor with the FURNAS pressure switch?

I suspect that you can find an off brand of the same size to replace yours at a halfway decent compressor parts outlet. Take the old one with you to be sure you get the same.

Your motor is straining to start because, I suspect, the unloader valve hasn't tripped to dump air over the piston, which should happen when the pressure switch reaches cut out pressure.

Sounds like a pressure switch. Only a changeout will tell. Make sure you wire it up correctly and that unloader valve works.

Bill

By pass pressure switch?

is it ok if i bypass the pressure switch on my DeVilbiss air compressor. It is broken and I don't have a part number because it has been switched out with a non origional part.

No! You run the risk of creating a significant, life threatening hazard. Find another switch.

Compressor OFF for only 35-40 SECONDS
by: Bill

Hard to be sure since I don't know the make or model of the compressor.

Is it cutting back in because you are using so much air the tank pressure falls that quickly?

Can you please provide more details?
