air compressor - constant release of pressure through the upload valve

i have a constant release of pressure through the upload valve, it slowly increses upto about 120 psi, the motor cuts out then back in to replace the lost air, i have swapped that valve as well as the check valve but have the same problem, any advice would be appreciated. it an old unit 1978, but i dont want to give up on the old girl ! can i simply remove the upload valvue or weld it shut ...?
