Adding an Auto Shutoff to a Binks Compressor

Hi,

I just bought a used compressor, a 1.5 hp unit made by binks with a quincy pump. The unit is older, but works well.

What I want to know is this, is there a way to convert the unit from a continuous run to an auto shutoff? I will be using this largely to power a small pin nailer and other tools, it now runs all the time when it is plugged in. This would be helpful in terms of power consumption, noise etc. The guy I bought it from said there is a way to do this, but couldn't offer any other advice.

Thanks for your help!

Ted, it is very unusual for a smaller compressor to be continuous run.

When it is running, does the pressure continue to rise non-stop, or does it get to a certain level, and then self-unloads, so that the running motor doesn't keep building pressure?

The mechanism that turns and air compressor on and off is the pressure switch. Click that link from the nav bar for details.

If your compressor continues to build pressure as it runs, get it fixed! This is dangerous.

Cheers,

Bill

To answer your question, the electric motor and flywheel keep running, but the compressor turns off when it reaches max capacity.

What I am wondering is if there is a way to make the motor turn off too, so that it only runs when there is a demand.

Ted, it's the same answer. You need to wire the motor through a pressure switch, so that when the pressure reaches the cut out level, the pressure switch trips, and the motor shuts down.
