ABAC 100 HP3 belt drive cuts after maybe 30 seconds.

When switching the compressor on it will run for about 30 seconds, just as the compressor starts picking up speed the cut off switch cuts off the compressor. I have removed the belt so that the motor runs on its own then it runs without a problem. What could the problem be?????

switch replaced
by: José

The compressor is working now. I replaced the switch. first time I switched the compressor on after replacing the switch it cut off as before. The second time I switched the compressor on she ran with no problems.

Thank you for your help.

start-up - not
by: Doug in s.d.ca

If I'm following, the motor/compressor can be manually turned easily with the drain valve open, but when you apply power, it buzzes, hums, turns a bit, then cuts off (is it a button on the motor that pops?).

Anyway, since you've already replaced the caps, all that's left is the start/run centrifugal switch on the motor, which switches in the run cap. Or a bad winding or brushes in the motor.

time to switch off
by: José

The compressor turns easily by hand with no load and the switch off time is +/- 2 seconds. I do not have an oscilloscope or a analogue meter.

voltage
by: Doug in s.d.ca

Can you get an analog meter or oscilloscope to see what's going on when the Fluke blanks?

And, you originally said about 30 seconds, but now seem to be saying only a couple of seconds before trip-off. Which is correct or did something change?

Does the pump turn OK manually with no load (open drain valve)?

Voltage test
by: José

Getting 227 volts when the motor is not running. As soon as the motor kicks in the volt drops no reading on the fluke and then the voltage goes to 220 volts for couple of seconds and the switch kicks out.

power
by: Doug in s.d.ca

OK, if you haven't been able to get it to run, it is probably empty.

You need to check the voltage at or near the motor (or even at the power cord) and tell what the voltage is with the machine off, and while it is trying to start.

ABAC 100 HP3 belt drive cuts after maybe 30 seconds.

You are correct it is a 100 l. I have replaced both caps. I see that the pressure gauges are both on zero. So I don't know if the tank is perhaps full as I pull the release pin on the incoming switch and nothing happens. I have replaced the cable with a thicker cable =/- 1.5 metres. I got this compressor from somebody else and it has been standing for a long time.

100 HP3
by: Doug in s.d.ca

This is a 100 litre 3HP wheeled compressor, right?

The cut off switch? Or a fuse/breaker?

The first things to check are do you have a full or nearly full tank? Does this happen if you start from empty tank?

Is your power supply giving you at or near 230V when it's trying to start?

Then, check your start and run capacitors, if present.

Let us know what you find.
