921.166420 humming noise - caused by the fan

I have a Craftsman Air Compressor 20 gallon 1.5 HP Model No. 921.166420.

Just recently the tank would not fill with air.

The compressor would hum and within a few seconds, trip my fuse box panel.

I removed the plastic housing around the motor and tried the compressor. It started with no humming and air was being deposited in the tank.

Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the plastic cooling fan was chipped/dented and the shroud also had some damage. In short, the fan was rubbing against the shroud and would get stuck and stop turning, hence the humming.

My question, has anyone ever had this issue and if so, how did you remedy the problem. I am thinking of trimming the fan via filing/belt sander. Thoughts anyone????

Compressor fan hitting which shroud
by: Doug in s.d.ca

Where is it hitting which shroud?
The front one, in front? That'd be on your right, facing it by the handle side.
