model 921.153101 Craftsman compressor will not build pressure

by Ron
(St. Gabriel, La.)

I have a model 921.153101, 1 hp, 3 gal, 125psi compressor. It will only pressure up to 35 psi. Everything in the compressor looks good. Even checked to be sure the cylinder walls were not scratched. I went ahead and changed the reed valves and replaced gaskets. Still doing the same thing.

Ron, you've nailed the first two of the issues that can cause an air compressor to run, and run, and not build air pressure.

Assuming that the valve and gasket replacement was successful, and there are no leaks to account for air loss, then I would guess that the cylinder seals may be going.

Cheers,

Bill

No pressure

Can we assume you did all the checks referred to on the Troubleshooting page about air compressors that don't build pressure?

I installed a new head gasket kit and no pressue.I wonder if there is a certain rotation all gaskets and valve plates must be bolted down. I installed as shown in the manual.

I have the same problem

Check your head gasket first. Pull off the plastic cover and remove the compressor "head" it is the blue gasket at the top above the valve plate with the two Reed Valves. the head gasket has a thin center section between the two air chambers in the compressor cylinder head. this tends to "blow out" frequently and results in only 20-30 psi being generated. The Head gasket is reference # 7 on the Sears parts list. It appears you mave to buy it with "Kit 2" which includes upper and lower cylinder gaskets and the valve plate gasket. Part No. for this is E100959 but I cannot find it on the Sears parts website.

Good luck!

Craftsman 1 HP 5gal - reed valve problem

by Jaret

How do you replace the reeds for this type of compressor?

Bill says...

Hello Jaret. Thanks for writing in.

I haven't dismantled every single air compressor to know specifically how the reed valves in your compressor are removed and replaced.

Ask your local Craftsman store where they get their air compressors repaired under warranty. Go and see those folks, and get the straight goods from them.

Or, check out the Repairs page and see if there's a local to you compressor repair location.

Cheers,

Bill
