919-16523 AIR COMPRESSOR BLOWS BREAKER

I have a craftsman model 919-16523. It would build pressure 100+ the first time I plug it in. Then when the pressure goes down it clicks throws breaker. It works great the first time you start it but when it calls for it the second time it blows breaker. The motor turns free so I dont think it is motor. Any suggestions?

Charlie, try this. Identify the unloader valve as part of or near your pressure switch.

Drain the tank with the compressor off. Close the drain and start the compressor. Let it run up to normal cut out pressure?

When it shuts off, did the unloader valve work? Let me know as a comment here, if you would.

Cheers,

Bill

The one-way valve(check value) that keeps pressure off the compressor allowing it to restart without
a load against the compressor its self is bad.

It was the cap switch
by: IamYogiRam

On mine the plastic housing that holds the capacitor wasn't mounted at the bottom. There was a pressure plate in there that wasn't activating so the capacitor wasn't helping the motor to start.

Unloader valve good. Took the small line off that went to the unloader valve. Took some air out of the take and tried start compressor. Motor turn over couple more revolution than before breaker blowed. So took main line off from the tank and the motor turned over fine. So is the motor bad because it couldnt push valve down in the take once it has pressure in the tank.

Charlie, you have eliminated the easy stuff. Now, you want to check out the motor start capacitor to see if it's working. See Electrical Issues on the site map page for a link.

Ok fired it up and it built up 100 pounds. I think I could hear the unlocker valve for second. Drained it and kept try at different pressures to get it running. Had to drain about all of it for it to run. Built it back up and started turning the motor by hand and it was very hard to turn it but I assume it is because of pressure in the tank. Or should it free spin. It like it has to much compression for the motor to turn over.

Charlie, be sure the unloader valve worked, as if it doesn't, that's likely your problem. This time, when you drain all the air, also remove the line from the top of the pump to the tank, remove and clean the check valve at the tank, then reassemble and check. But, first, be sure that the unloader valve is working.

Gerry, Sears has an excellent parts depot, and you may be a manual there.

See the troubleshooting section on the site map page for information about what causes an air compressor to lug and pop breakers.

Make sure your power supply is clean, and you are not using an extension cord.

Bill
