70 PSI VALVE FLUTTERS WHILE COMPRESSOR IS ON

i HAVE A SPEEDAIRE 3Z182 COMPRESSOR THAT WAS POPPING OFF THE 70 PSI VALVE ON THE SIDE. WE REPLACED IT AND THE SAME THING HAPPENS. IT STILL BUILDS PRESSURE AND SHUTS OFF WHEN FULL.I WAS WONDERING IF THAT VALVE ON THE FRONT OF THE COMPRESSOR HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT.

Howdy Mark.

Sorry chum, I don't know what you mean by a "POPPING OFF THE 70 PSI VALVE ON THE SIDE"?

Can you post a photo so I can see what you are referring to?

Thanks,

Bill

East Texas resolves fluttering PRV valve issue
by: Terry

Looking at a photo of the 3Z182, and determining that it is a 2 stage compressor pump, I have to assume that what you are talking about is the pressure relief valves on the intercooler tubes connecting the LP pistons with the HP pistons.

They are probably located on the intake manifold itself of the HP piston.

I suspect that the reason one of the pressure relief valves is "popping off" is because of a cylinder intake valve failure, most probably on the intake side of the high pressure piston.

If this happened, when the HP piston came up to compress the air out of the cylinder, some air is leaking back through the closed intake valve into the intercooler tube and creating a higher than normal pressure causing the pressure relief valve to exceed its 70 psi rated capacity, and it released.

Thats why a new valve did not change it.

There is also a pressure relief valve on the HP exhaust or discharge manifolds, but these are rated higher than 70 psi, because the normal pressure exiting the HP piston is quite a lot higher than for a 70 psi relief valve that you seemed sure of the psi rating.

The valve could just be dirty and carboned up, or could be damaged. Many times the cylinder valves can be cleaned and reused.
