6 gal pancake knocking

Pancake compressor knocks slightly while running, but louder starting at 60 psi. It's brand new. Is that normal?

Porter Cable compressor knocking

If this were mine, and it was brand new, I'd be on my way back to the store to get a replacement.

Knocking could be caused by a loose belt, a poor motor mount, a number of things, or it could be symptomatic of a pump problem.

Not knowing where the sound is coming from, nor what it sounds like, makes it hard to be sure, but again, if it were mine, and having run compressors hundreds of times, a knocking compressor is not a good sign.
