5 HP Campbell Hausfeld air compressor

I just replaced the pressure switch on my 5hp CH compressor as it would not shut off and when building pressure would open the pressure relief valve,

My problem is that after installing the new switch it immediately trip breaker when i put power to it.

Suspecting that it would be on the motor side, I disconnected the leads to the motor. Tried this and it still trips breaker.

Breaker doesn't trip when I switch the pressure switch to off, but when I turn it to on, it immediately trips.

I am suspecting that the brand new pressure switch is defective.
____________
I would expect that the switch is defective, it's been wired wrong, or it may not be rated for the voltage, John.

Based on what you have written I see no other options.

Cheers,

Bill

Switch is good
by: John

After closer examination I found that even though the new Condor switch was supposed to be identical. Condor has changed the positioning of the line and motor terminals from line ,line horizontal to vertical. Markings were hard to read without good lighting. Thanks for alls help.

Well, that seems to prove the switch is shorted to ground on one or both sides to ground, IOW, bad.

Bummer.

Identical Switch
by: john

New switch is an identical replacement.Wiring terminals are same etc. Put old switch back on and compressor runs fine except won't cut off at 135 psi.

A bad switch is certainly possible, but pretty unlikely, given your symptoms.

You can check the switch operation by removing it and using a V.O.M. to check that there is not a short except when the contacts are closed and only to those terminals. None of the terminals should be grounded, that is, connected to the case threads.

If it's good, then reinstall it, but double-check you have all the wires in the right places.
