3 hp 20 gallon 230 volt Sears compressor won't start

by Joel Christman
(La Mesa, CA, USA)

My compreesor will not run. I've checked both hot lines and there is power. I've checked the pressure swith and even bypassed it. Nothing. The contacts in the motor are hot but it will not budge. No buzzing, no humming, nothing.

Thanks for your help
Joel

Joel, if the power supply is getting through the pressure switch, and then reaching the motor circuit, and nothing is happening, then something has to be blocking the power.

I suspect that your start capacitor is blown, and power cannot get through it.

See the page on this site for testing capacitors so you can check it out.

Was it the capacitor?

Bill

1.5 hp older sears compressor builds pressure to about 15lbs then motors struggles and wants to stall

by Richard B.
(pacific, wa)

I turn on the compressor and it does fine until it hits about 15lbs of pressure then the motor slows down and wants to stall. I have cleaned the electric motor and also the pump. But the issue still exists. Any ideas?

Richard, if no change in the external power supply, that is that you haven't moved the compressor and are now using an extension cord or power bar (never do this), and assuming that the condition you describe is new, the first check is the intake filter.

Is it clean? To check, run the compressor without it for a few minutes to see if the pressure goes higher.

I always try to eliminate the easy first.

With the tank empty and the power off, remove and clean the tank check valve. Re-install.

Now, assuming this doesn't solve the problem, then you will want to check the run capacitor on your compressor next. See the page on this site about how to do that.

Cheers,

Bill

How to open tank drain valve on a Sears craftsman model 919.153310

How to open water release valve on bottom of tank
_____________________________

Christy, many of the tank drain valves have a "knurled" ring which you can grab onto and turn to open or close the tank drain valve. You normally turn the valve in a clockwise direction to close, anti-clockwise to open, though on some drain valves the direction is reversed.

Often, too, when you turn the knob on the drain valve, the actual opening or closing process takes place inside the tank, so you don't actually see anything happening on the outside of the tank.

I don't know what type of drain valve you have, but it certainly should be able to be opened or closed by rotating the valve operator. If you can re-post with a picture, I could be more specific.

Cheers,

Bill
