26 gallon JobSmart only builds up 25 psi and it cuts off

by Joe Velasquez

Compressor only builds up 25 to 40 psi and it cuts off. Will not start up until you release the air in it. Sometimes it will start if tapped lightly.

Compressor is about 2 years old and its a 26 gallon JobSmart.

Sounds like it could be a number if issues with your compressor Joe.

Regarding the cutting out at 25-40 PSI; that suggests that you have a failing pressure switch.

That is sometimes won't start with pressure in the tank unless you "tap" it suggests that your compressor has an unloader valve issue.

If the compressor starts with no pressure in the tank and stops at 25-40 PSI, does the unloader valve trip open? If so, then, for sure, the pressure switch has a problem.

If the unloader valve does not trip when the compressor stops, first replace the pressure switch with one that cuts in and cuts out at similar pressures as your compressor did before the problem.

I suspect the new pressure switch will allow the compressor to run up to normal cut out pressures, and if so, ensure that the unloader valve works when the pressure reaches the normal cut out level.

See the pages on this site about the unloader valve and pressure switches for more info, if needed.

Cheers,

Bill

Job smart pressure switch

I have the same problem with mine. Builds up to 40 psi then shuts off. Release the air a little and reset it builds back up to 40 psi and kicks off again. I guess you get what you pay for from tractor supply.

The pressure switch is the issue if the tank pressure reaches 40 PSI and then the compressor shuts off.

Confirm that by using a multi-meter to check and see if power is getting by the switch to the motor circuit when the compressor has shut off. Likely it is not, and that means that the pressure switch is cutting the power to the motor at 40 PSI.

If you have not fiddled with the cut in and cut out settings on the pressure switch, that would suggest to me that the diaphragm inside the switch has cracked.

With no details about how old your air compressor is or how often it's used, it's hard to be specific, but with what you've written, I think it would be time for a new pressure switch for your Jobsmart air compressor.

Jobsmart model ZJ3040SA compressor pressure

Bill, I have a Jobsmart model ZJ3040SA and in trying to use it yesterday it would run to about 50# and that was it. It would not shut off, or make any more pressure. There is a small valve on top that was leaking air, and air seemed to leak out the intake when I shut it off.

The machine is about a year old, and the place where the serial # was is rubbed off.

Came from Tractor Supply, and has always been a good machine till now. Even though I rarely use it.

Any suggestions

I have the same compressor and it started doing the exact same thing. Air also coming out the inlet filter. Nothing in owners manual under trouble shooting.

TA-2040 will not restart at manufactures restart point

Brand new, I have had it for about 1 mounth. When in use it will not restart at manufactures restart point. Acts like it is under a strain. When I let the pressure below restart point it will start, cannot use it as is.

Empty the tank once again then start the compressor. Monitor the unloader valve to be sure it operates when the compressor reaches cut out and stops.

See the unloader page for details if you are not sure what it is.

Post a comment here is the problem is not the unloader valve and we will check further.

Cheers,

Bill

Start Problem
by: Anonymous

If your compressor will not start when pressure is in the tank or tries to start followed by a buzzing noise coming from the motor and you half to bleed the pressure from the tank down very low to get it start here is how to diagnose the problem.

first thing to check is are you using a extension cord make sure it is at least a 12 gauge rated at 15 amps for 50 foot extension and that you are using a receptacle that does not have any other items being used off of it such as chest freezer or any other type of current draw.

try plugging the unit directly into the receptacle to see if this solves the problem. I use 10 gauge cord at 50 feet this solved the problem for me but a 12 gauge is also sufficient.

If the unit still wont start you need to test the check valve this is the brass valve on the side of the compressor with the copper tubing with fins this line transfers the air from pump to the tank. To test this you will need to let the compressor pump up and shut off unplug the power cord let the unit cool about 15 minunts as the tubing will be hot.

Using a wrench to fit the nut losing the flare nut on the nipple at the pump pull the flare nut down a little this will losing the tubing from the nipple.

If you hear air even a small amount the valve is bad and needs to be replaced this will build pressure up in the pump cylinder and make it impossible for the unit to start.

(I believe that this air would actually bleed out the unloader valve, which is open when the compressor is off. - comment from Bill )

If the valve test good the problem will be in the pump or the motor or the run start capacitor could also be bad.

since this requires testing of the motor and capacitor i don't recommend disassembly of the unit since the start capacitor must be discharged and removed for testing.

JobSmart air compressor from Tractor Supply

JobSmart air compressor from Tractor Supply

When I turn on compressor it runs slow for a few seconds then shuts off. I have to unplug the compressor and wait for its circuit breaker to reset, and then try again with the same results. It is a Jobsmart 25100vb vertical. Thank you Craig White

This could be the problem, because the following morning when I tried to start it the lights were off. The outlet is on the same circuit as the lights. Thank you Craig

I have it plugged into a 110v wall outlet. This morning it started and stayed running.

It sounds to me as though you have a marginal power supply to the compressor. If you are using an extension cord, don't. If you have other appliances on the same circuit as the socket you are plugging your air compressor into, if they are running when your air compressor is trying to start, that could be the problem.
