221565 Kobalt motor hums and kicks out

I have a model 221565 Kobalt air compressor. It's about 4 years old. When I turn it on the motor only hums, so I removed the belt guard and spun the compressor pulley while it was turned on. It started and pumped up to 165 pounds and shut off. I let enough air out for it to start again and it just sat and hummed again until the motor tripped. Can the motor be shot after only 4 years and minimal use?

I don't have a clue where to start

"I read the troubleshooting links and went back to the compressor". Hmmmmm, I'm wondering how you missed the link on the troubleshooting page entitled "Testing Capacitors". Also wondering how you missed the link on the same page about "Humming air compressors?"

Jerry, the information you want is here on the pages of my site.

I am thinking however that what you really need is to have someone deal with these compressor issues for you, and that's fair. However, those folks are called compressor repair shops, and for their services, you'll need to open your wallet.

There is no charge ( except for your time to read the pages ) for the help available from this site. But, you do have to do that yourself.

Cheers and good luck.

motor hums
by: Jerry Schleicher

Bill, I read the troubleshooting links and went back to the compressor. When I flip it on with an empty air tank, it simply hums and will not turn. I looked for a link on how to check the starting capacitor, but couldn't find one. I don't have a clue where to start and don't want to just start replacing parts.

Hey Jerry, see the troubleshooting page and follow the link about humming air compressor for some things to check out.

Once you've done that, why not give us an update here so we know what you found?

Cheers,

Bill
