2001 GA15 FF stays running in unloaded state

I have a 2001 GA15 FF Atlas Copco, compressor, Stays running in unloaded state

Hello, this compressor has worked flawlessly for years, according to the panel and the hours on the service items, it's fine.

It now will start up build pressure "loaded state" to 129 psi, then unload and stay running forever and won't shut down, I can use the air, and it will change from unloaded to loaded, build pressure but won't actually cycle down.

I opened her up and found a huge build up of dust and debris on the oil cooler, fans, etc, there's no alarm tripping but continues to cycle forever.

I cleaned a bunch and still same issue, on the bottom of compressor motor the high mark is just in there while in unloaded state, loaded it drops back into green, any thoughts?

Breakers?
by: Carl

Do you mean the star/delta breakers stuck in?

If that was the case then i am very surprised that either it ran at all or that it didnt go bang!!

If star AND delta are ever in at the same time it would cause a big bang, but as long as you have a solution then that's great!

Found problem!
by: German AutoSport

So the minimum voltage this compressor can run on is 200V, which is what I have over the past 15 years

at times the voltage may have been slightly under, maybe due to other high voltage items running in a busy shop, welder, lifts, garage door etc...

so the breaker for the compressor itself gets pulled into circuit then releases as it should when pressure builds and then unloads, but the contacts in the breaker were burnt and actually stuck in, causing the continuous running

so I have a new breaker in order and that should fix it

that explains no error message or codes

Ideally this should run at 230V to allow some ups and downs, but for 15 years, I'll keep my eye on that and see where it goes, Thanks for all the help!...

Timer
by: Carl

Hi first of all what do you mean by "I cleaned a bunch and still same issue, on the bottom of compressor motor the high mark is just in there while in unloaded state, loaded it drops back into green"

Do you mean the oil level?

Secondly, do you mean that your compressor goes onload then offload and continues to run but doesn't shutdown after it has been offload for sometime?

If so, you should have a timer in the electrical cabinet, have a look (there may be 2 timers) one for the time it takes to go from star to delta (this is read in seconds) the other is how long the compressor runs for whilst offloaded before it shuts down. Its this timer you should look at replacing.

Hope this helps

Carl
