1986 IR P100 Compressor Losing Air Pressure

Compressor will build air, and maintain to 100-120 psi. The once I slightly crack open the service valve the compressor can not maintain pressure. Any ideas on why?

Obvious candidates would include the intake filter and valve, and the separator - Have you checked those? And what else?

Have you tried leaving the service valve cracked to see if the pump wakes up? IOW, does the compressor sense that the pressure is low and rev up the engine?
