Harbor freight compressor 125 psi air compressor pops overload

2-1/2 hp gallon air compressor used for 1/2 hour out of the box. Put the oil in as required. Not abused at all.

Now the compressor pops the overload switch as soon as it is turned on.

It is not the circuit because it pops both 15 and 20 amps circuits and blows the GUI on the circuit. my next step is to throw it in the garbage unless you folks have another idea.

GUI?

GF(C)I, maybe?

You probably should rule out a ground fault if so.

Did you break it in?

Harbour Frieght Compressor - motor overheating?

by Walker
(Sapelo Island)

Horbour Frieght compressor trips the reset button after running for about 15 seconds. After ten min. I can reset it just to have it run another 15 secs.

Thanks

Walker, the reset button often pops because the motor has overheated. After you wait for it to cool, you can reset, and start the compressor and motor again, but if it overheats again, it will pop the reset again. This is not good for the motor.

Why is your compressor electrical motor overheating?

In the absence of any real information about your air compressors condition, let me suggest that you first check to see if there is anything else running on the same power circuit that your compressor is, and if so, stop those appliances. Second, if you are using an extension cord, don't. Third, dump all the air from the tank before trying to restart your air compressor again.

Any change? Please post here as a comment.

Cheers,

Bill

Hi Greg here.

its a harbor freight piece of junk that's the problem you'd be better off spending the same or less amount of money buying a used one from a reputable co. On offer - up get the app for your phone and check.

im sure you'll find many in your area

i know this doesn't solve your current problem .nevertheless you cant make chicken soup with chicken s***! You'll have chicken essence but it tastes like chicken s***

new compressor shuts off and on and finally shut off as if the piston locked up?
by: Don

Bought a new compressor at harbor freight. It was on sale. I bought it and then after several months in my shop used it ,(or tried to use it) I could not get it started. Finally it would start and shut off.start and shut off. Finally set the pressure so it would turn on and keep going. Ran it maybe two minutes and it froze up. Push the reset and it ran a second and really froze up. That was a 6 months ago. Found the receipt to take it back. On the receipt it said AS IS- sorta hit me hard being it did not have that on the sale sign! Bought it at the Richland wash. store . Now, am going to tear into it and see what is wrong. I think the piston froze. I now need top know how to tear into it!

Overheating Compressor
by: Sean

I have the same issue and have the same compressor- I have it plugged into the same outlet that I've always used for the compressor and it has only recently been blowing the reset button. What are some mechanical issues that could be to blame for the resetting? Like Walker's compressor, mine has also been getting very hot, but I'm not sure how much hotter it is getting now compared to it's usual heat.

Thanks!

Then, something is overloading the motor to the point of thermal cut out. Could be a bad valve in the pump, but more likely it is a run capacitor or a motor that is failing / wearing out.

Harbour Freight compressor
by: G Walker

Tried draining the compressor and checked the load on the breaker and the compressor still runs hot. The compressor is hardly used but out of warranty.
Iti s a 4HP 10Gal 120vac Item 90234. It seems that just the top of the compressor overheats, even the copper tubing going to the tank gets too hot to touch. This is causing the reset to trip.

Thanks

The pump head and line running from the pump to the tank will always be too hot to touch when the compressor is running normally.

I am surprised to hear that it is a 4HP, and you are running it on 120 VAC. I don't believe you can fully power a 4 HP motor with 120, that size preferring a 220 volt feed. Regardelss, if it's going off on reset, it is the motor that's overheating, not the pump, and I still think then that you have a power supply problem, if there is no mechanical issues with the compressor.

making noises at start up and then shuts down at about 40 psi. bad motor or bad pump??

by Bob
(Macon, Ga.)

Starts and then gets banging noise. at about 40 psi it quits running.

I can't hear the banging noise from here, Bob, though I am trying real hard. Might be my age. :-)

If the noise is coming from the pump, then it's a mechanical pump issue. If it is from the motor, then a motor rebuild is in order.

I'd go with the pump being the issue as if it were the motor mechanically failing, I would think that it would overheat.

Is this one oil lubed? If so, do you have the oil sump filled to the correct level?

Bill

HR m# 67847 tries to start but trips reset

Have a HF model # 67847. When the compressor tries to start, it pumps a few time, but sets of the reset switch.

After waiting, if I try to start again, but press the plunger on the start switch (part #3) on the manual parts list) it will start.

Once started, the compressor works fine until the tank reaches time to refill, and the reset switch goes off again.

I tried to order a starter switch, but HF says part not available. Any suggestions?
