does not want to shut off

air compressor reaches a certain point and tries to shut off and starts back up.afraid this will blow capacitors.

cleaned up unloader valve.

could this be bad check valve.

If the air pressure in the tank reaches the normal cut out pressure of your air compressor, the pressure switch trips to shut off the compressor motor, and then immediately trips back to restart the compressor, then it's the pressure switch itself that is probably at fault.

If, however, the compressor shuts off, and it is an air leak/flow bleeding the tank pressure down to the cut in pressure level, and you are not using air, then it's likely not the pressure switch.

I would shut the compressor off, dump all the tank air, remove, clean and replace the tank check valve and see if that made a difference.

If it did not, post more info here as a comment, please.

Bill

Ray, what? You don't feed your dog? :-)

Typically there is an air line that runs between where the air from the top of the pump goes down into the tank. The tank check valve is in the fitting at the tank, and a line is teed off above that check valve over to the pressure switch.

This allows the pressure switch to read the pressure in the tank, and when the pressure in the tank reaches normal cut out, the pressure switch trips off the motor.

If that line is gone, the pressure switch cannot read the tank pressure. Don't run your air compressor until you get this fixed. It is dangerous.

Bill

compressor works but stays running all the time

porter cable jetstream air compressor 135 psi 3hp 4 gallon

The compressor runs and will not build any pressure, or it runs until the PRV lets go?

If the former, see the Troubleshooting section on the site map for some links.

If the latter, it's likely your pressure switch is pooched.

Bill

want shut off

by Greg Wilkins
(Wetumpka, Alabama)

compressor builds up pressure but will not automatically shut off.

Hi Greg.

If the compressor runs, pumps air up to the traditional cut out pressure level, and then continues pumping air pressure higher than that, it's likely the pressure switch has failed.

If the compressor keeps pumping because the air pressure in the tank never reaches the cut out pressure level, that's another story. See Troubleshooting from the site map page.

Bill

dos'nt shut off

when it reaches the correct pressure it will not shut off

Clarence, when it reaches cut out pressure, the compressor keeps on running, right?

Is it continuing to build air pressure past the normal cut out point, or is the air pressure in the tank staying at the same level, and not rising any more?

If you wish to answer, please comment here so I can keep track of our discussion.

Bill
