Shut off switch sticks, keeps running

Mike, by the shut off, do you mean the lever on the side of the pressure switch?

Regardless, it is the pressure switch that turns the motor of the air compressor on and off. If that switch is not working (whether it sticks or is just fried) you likely need to replace it.

The pressure switch is one of two things that will turn the compressor off and prevent over-pressurization. The other is the PRV. Both should be working before using the air compressor.

Bill

Eagle Iron horse Compressor Model IH653036L - will not shut off!

Hi BILL ! I have a Eagle Iron horse Compressor Model IH653036L, 3 HP motor with a 6.5 US gal. tank. It has a pressure switch FENWAI model FW-10 which says on the cover sticker..Pressure min. on 35PSI and max off at 150.

The on cut in is 95PSI and the off cut out is 125.

It is plugged directly into a wall socket in my garage(not any extension cord attached) on a 15 amp circuit(have since relaced the breaker to a 20 amp).

Here is the problem.....Months ago when i moved the arm to the auto on position, it didnt always come on.It would start to HUM and if i didnt catch it in time, the breaker would "trip". If i flipped the auto on lever on and off repeatedly it would eventually kick in and pressure up then shut off when at the max.

I changed the oil and like a "DORK" used the wrong type of oil. I rechanged the oil to compressor oil and appears i caught it in time to avoid major damage.

Now the problem i have is it comes on fine, pressures up fine to the max but continues to run while going into the "RED ZONE" and starts to "PUTT,PUTT,PUTT" extremely loud as if its about to blow up etc. Of course i shut it down as quick as i can but this is making me nervous, to say the least. Can u help me????????It would be very much appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks in advance..Lyle

Lyle, it sounds to me as though the points in the pressure switch are burnt, and in fact, may have welded together on the cut out side so the points never separate to cut the power.

It were my compressor I would be putting on a new pressure switch.... fast!

Cheers,

Bill

keeps running and air is forced through the switch housing.

keeps running and air is forced through the switch housing. It sometimes judders to a halt after forcing air out through switch housing but will not be at full pressure. If i depress the emergency cut off switch on my Fini compressor the whole cycle starts again.

Before you toss out and replace your pressure switch, try this.

Unplug and dump all air.

Open the line where it meets the tank, remove, and clean thoroughly the check valve. Reassemble.

Any change? Maybe you could post here as a comment and let me know, Stuart. Then we'll try something else.

Cheers,

Bill

The regualtor's purpose is to control the pressure of the air stream from the compressor to your air tool.

It is the pressure switch that controls the compressor cut in and cut out.

Perhaps read the pages on both linked from the site map, and if you have any additional questions, just post them as a comment here.
