unloader valve on Champion HR3-8

by m kuzara

Replaced the 3 phase motor on a Champion HR3-8 with a single phase motor. All the wires were disconnected when I got it. It starts and runs fine. However, there are 2 wires coming from, what I assume, is the unloader valve. When the compressor shuts off, the unloader valve is bleeding all the air from the tank. Any idea which terminals the wires go to? When I put my multi-meter on them, I get continuity between the 2 wires with them not being connected to anything.

Thanks

Unloader valve
by: Buster

Not knowing what state of dissassembly the unit was in when you got it, sound like the unloader solenoid valve is on the tank side of the check valve instead of on the compressor side, which is why it is a normally open solenoid valve, the continuity you are reading with your meter should be the coil for the solenoid. The valve energises and closes when the motor is running and pressuring up the tank and opens, deenergises, to unload the compressor side when the motor stops running, assuming the check valve is good. Take a close look at the piping arrangement and see if the check valve is in place and if it is actually functioning properly, could be that the check valve is bad and letting the pressure bleed back through the open unloader valve.
Hope this helps, let me know if this makes sense, have a great day,
Buster

Forgot to add.
When I hook one wire up to the line side of the pressure switch and the other to the motor side, the unloader valve will close as long as the motor is running. If it reaches pressure and shuts down, or I turn the power off, the unloader valve opens and stays open, bleeding all the air from the tank.
If I leave the wires disconnected, the unloader valve is open all the time, whether the motor is running or not.

Champion compressor with the R30 pump - how much oil?

by Jamie Mills
(Centralia Mo)

Just bought a Champion compressor with the R30 pump with 7.5h motor. Can not find anywhere how much oil does this compressor hold? It seems to be a secret.

Need to know how much oil to buy for R30 pump?

Looks like you could get a manual online, but it depends on the revision of your machine.

Also, unclear what you mean by "cuts out" - do you mean it loses pressure after getting to max pressure?
