5Z639A has a sputtering motor?
5Z639 Westward air compressor (Photo: www.grainger.com)
I have a 7.5 HP Speedaire Model: 5Z639A 1 Phase
It starts fine but after about 10 seconds it begins to sputter
Hmmm. Sputtering motor? It's a single phase, 220 volt electric motor, is that correct? Also, your model number pulls up a different brand of compressor from Grainger, a Westward??
I have never heard an electric motor sputter, so I need you to please explain what this term means to you a bit better, as a comment here.
And, are you sure the noise you are hearing from your compressor is coming from the motor? Could it be coming from the pump instead?
More info as a comment here, please.

Venting a Speedaire 1VN93 for exhaust and gasoline fumes?
by Jeff Langley
(Adrian Steel, Adrian, MI)
Speedaire mounted on stand
We have a current customer that has requested that we install the 1VN93 in the back of their cargo van. They would like to have us exhaust the unit for CO thru the floor of the vehicle.
Also, they would like us to have the unit accept fuel directly from the van's fuel tap port via an external fuel pump.
Is this recommended?
Will this void any of the warranty of the compressor during any modification?
What parts would be required to make this application work?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Jeff, I have no idea what DOT regulations come into play when attempting a compressor installation like this, and I would, if it were me, make sure that the work I performed as to the exhaust and fuel met whatever standards they require.
The fuel source for the air compressor is a gravity feed tank. I'm not quite sure how you would go from the fuel pump on the vehicle into the fuel supply for the compressor.
In terms of exhausting the CO from the muffler, the way I see it is that as long as the exhaust pipe from the outflow from the compressor doesn't create back pressure as it is plumbed outside of the van, then I don't see why that wouldn't work.
You will have to check with the manufacturer regarding their warranty issues. My feeling is that the work you plan might void a warranty. Check with Grainger.

5Z185 - Bad Pulley on Speedaire - need replacement?
I have a speedaire compressor model #5Z185, the pulley is marked PU98, K199C. I need a source for a new pulley
I have posted your request.
I, too, searched for information on your Speedaire 5Z185 with no luck.
I take it you have already contacted Speedaire, with no luck?
There are a host of pulley distributors around. Take the old pulley with you and visit a few. I expect you will find a replacement fairly easily in doing so. That is what I would do, anyway.
