Kobalt K7060HFV will fill tank, but upon restart motor will turn two revolutions and STOP.

by Ray

I have a 3.5hp 60 gallon Kobalt as listed which is being supplied with 240V, and the problem is as stated.

I purchased it used about 4 years ago, at the time it had only been used twice.

I finally put it in service and here's the issue.

It will fill the tank to correct 135psi and stop. When psi drops, the motor restarts but will only make a couple of revolutions and stop.

I can drain the tank completely and it will restart correctly and fill the tank. When it reaches 135psi I hear the air bleed of in the loud hissing sound for about one second. What's my next step?

Ray, thanks for the informative post and question. One more from me.

When the compressor stops, what stops it? Is the pressure switch tripping off, does a breaker blow, does the motor grind to a halt... what stops, please?

The compressor stops by the pressure switch trigger. According to the manual it should stop at 135psi, which it does. It stops and I can hear the hiss of air blowing off. When pressure drops below pressure switch setting the compressor kicks back on and will make a few revolutions and stop-you can see the electric motor trying to turn. I shut it off before it trips any breakers. I can then drain the tank completely, and the compressor will restart correctly-and I begin the process all over again. I can manually rotate the motor motor and compressor by hand when this happens very easily.

If the unloader valve is working correctly, and there is no change in the power supply, the air intake filter is clean, then I suspect a start capacitor issue. See how to check it on this site.

Piston broke in half

I have a two year old Kobalt 17 gal oil-less air compressor that I have used probably no more that 20 times in two years and tonight the piston arm snapped in half. Anyone have tips or tricks on how to remove the barings and remaining piston arm from the Shaft? It will not slide off. Picture included.

Also, anyone know where to get a higher quality piston kit?

Kobalt 20 gallon compressor only builds 50lbs of pressure then shuts off

Kobalt 20 gallon air compressor

I have a Kobalt 20 gallon 155psi. compressor that builds pressure to 5olbs. and then shuts off. I replaced the pressure switch and it continues to do the same thing. What should I check next?

Tim, the pressure switch reacts to tank pressure.

If the pressure in the tank is below the normal cut in pressure setting for that pressure switch, it will trip to on, and the compressor motor should start.

When the pressure reaches cut out, the switch trips to off and the compressor motor stops.

If your pressure switch is what is shutting the power supply to the compressor motor off at 50 PSI, either the pressure switch is set incorrectly, or if it is set correctly, then that switch has failed.

When your compressor stops, is the power supply to the compressor stopped at the pressure switch (then the switch is the problem) or is the power getting past the pressure switch to the motor circuit, and it's the motor that has stopped?

You will need a multimeter to check this.

Add a comment here with that info, would you?

Kobalt compressor will not restart

by jerry dupree
(jefferson)

compressor will not start was running for a hour them it stop an it will not start back up it a 30 gallon

Jerry, not a lot to go on here. You don't indicate the model of your Kobalt air compressor, I cannot look it up to see what's what.

Tell me, as a comment here, what the pressure in the tank is when the compressor won't start, what is the normal cut in and cut out pressures, what HP motor you have, how you have it powered, and the modelf number, please.

We'll see if we can help figure out why your air compressor won't start.

Cheers,

Bill

an hour?

You mean it actually was pumping for an hour? That's abuse.

Probably overheated, may not be ruined.
