My Sears air compeossor won't start and trips the breaker.

Scott, please have a read of the "compressor will not start" pages linked from the site map, and give me some ideas about the condition of the compressor, the power supply, the tank pressure, what you see and what you hear when you try to start your Sears air compressor and the breaker trips. I need more info if I, or any reader, can help your compressor problem. Add more info as a comment here, please.

sears craftsman 240volt Air compressor not working

How to repair my sears craftsman 240volt air compressor?

I brought my air compressor with me to Thailand when I moved here a month ago and today I went to use it and plugged it into the outlet in Thailand which is a 220volt outlet.

Plugged it and had it running for about less than a minute and saw smoke coming from the generator side before it shut off on it's own.

please help.

Btw I switched the plug on the compressor because i had a different outlet when I was living in America. Thank you in advance

OK. I'm confused. I didn't know your air compressor had a generator?

If what you say is the generator turns out to be the motor, then I suspect you have wired the plug incorrectly.

If you aren't absolutely sure, particularly since 220 or 240 will kill you quicker than a head butt from water buffalo, ask around for a local electrician to help you.

Cheers, and good luck in Thailand.

overseas 220 volts

Other thing about motors and overseas 220... here in the US of A our 220 is two separate 110 volt lines that are out of phase. In Europe, 220 is one a 220 volt line and a neutral, very similar to our 110 volt line and neutral (then there is a ground).

I was stationed in Europe three separate wonderful 4 year tours (each) and installed, repaired and calibrated medical equipment. Most motors did not have a problem - even with the 50hz everyone uses but us, but some did not like "their" 220 over ours.

With a 220 plug here you get 110 volt to ground on one pin, then 110v to gnd on the other. There? You get 220v to gnd on one, and 0 to the other to gnd... sounds strange, but it be!

The US has 60 hz and 110 as the most common voltage. We are it. Most of the world uses 220/50hz.

Air compressor not working

Thanks for the quick response. Today I went ahead and checked if the compressor was still working and to my surprise it worked;) (believed the breaker saved it even tho it went up in smoke!) So now my question is will it eventually burn it self out if I try to use it with a different hertz or will it just run hotter and be ok? Sorry for the stupid question.I did a little reading on hertz and can't really understand if it would burn out my compressor if ran for a long period of time. Thanks again in advance.

Check your hertz rating. US is generally 60 Thailand may be 50. I've lost several compressors this way. Iraq Afgan and Kuwait.

Craftsman model 921.166390 wont start

by Mike M
(Strongsville, Ohio)

Was using my 4 year old compressor to inflate car tires when it just quit working.

I have unplugged it, drained it and tried to restart.

It has been three days since i had this issue and cannot get it to run.

When plugged in and turned on you can hear a buzzing or humming sound for a few seconds before it gets quiet again. Was not using an extension cord. Took shroud off top and i am unable to turn the flywheel by hand. Is motor shot?

Possibly, Mike.

That it hums for a while then stops suggests that it's trying to go, and overheating as a result, shutting it down on thermal cut out.

Assuming the same issue is there with the tank empty of all air, the next thing I would do is check the capacitor. See how to on this site.

If the cap checks out, then it may be the motor itself.

Yes I tried with tank empty. The flywheel is definitely stuck and will not rotate at all. I will try the capacitors but I am not holding my breath it will be an easy fix. Thank you for your quick reply!

If the flywheel is not rotatable, that sure suggests something binding in the pump.

Maybe getting that freed up would be the best first option.
