blowing fuse in plug

by garry
(portsmouth UK)

hi. i have got an ingersoll rand compressor fitted with model number 234 , serial number 252783 electric motor. its single phase 240v. my problem is when i plug it in to the mains it runs for about 2 seconds and blows the fuse in the plug. 13amp fuse fitted in plug.

do i need to use a 35 amp rated plug socket or is a normal plug socket ok?

its a 2.5hp motor , 1450 min rpm , class E , volts 240 or 480.

it was originally in a car repair workshop and used regularly . they bought a new compressor and kept this as a spare backup.

i have been given it so that i can spray the internal face of a boat mould.

any info or help will be much appreciated.

thanks garry

Garry, as I've oft said, I'm no electrician, and it will take one to give you the straight goods.

I did a bit of checking, and found these theoretical numbes:

746 Watts = 1 Hp

Hp X 746 Watts
---------------- = AMPS
Voltage

10 Hp Motor At 220 Volts

Is

10 Hp X 746 Watts
---------------------- = 33.90 Amps
220 Volts

Amps X Volts = Watts

I hope they make some sense to you.

I have an I.R. 25hp. when I start it up it sounds like the screw wants to stallout or is binding causing the belt to sqeaul. when I shut it off I can rotate the screw by hand with little effort.

Probably would help a bit if folks knew what the model number and motor horsepower was. I suspect that there are similarities in all, yet there are differences too.

Ingersoll rand 5hp compressor starts slow and labors

by Ernie

Ingersoll rand 60gal tank 5hp single phase 220v,

All of a sudden it started to sound like it is starting slow and over working to get up to speed,

Ran great for 3 years.

Replaced motor same thing. Disconnected tube to the check valve and runs great.

I reinstalled the tube and started it with an empty tank and it started and ran fine until it got to about 40 lbs and then it began to slow down again and was laboring excessively.

I am thinking its the check valve now but I can blow thru it with just my mouth.

What do you think?

Ernie, just so I'm clear, you replaced the motor with a different one? The new one had the capacitors attached, or did you use the old?

Make sure the intake filter is clean.

I would surmise from your posting that you may have a high pressure valve failing. You say when the compressor reaches 40 PSI the back pressure is slowing it.

Or, it may be a capacitor issue. If the motor is a replacement and the symptoms stayed the same, it's not likely a motor issue.

Cheers,

Bill
