Compressor trips the breaker, but not when empty

by Roger
(Wales uk)

Hi,my compressor tries to start but struggles for around 10 seconds then it blows the trip.

If the tank is empty it will start with no problem and run all day.
I have changed the oil.
There does seem to be a bit of oil in the water which there never used to be.
It seems to be worse in cold weather.
can you help?

Roger, starting a compressor in cold water adds to the start-up load, so that's part of the issue.

I think the primary compressor problem yours has is that the UNLOADER VALVE isn't working properly.

Please cycle the compressor to cut off, and make sure that the compressor unloads when it reaches cut out an stops. If it does not, the added load of air trapped over the piston is likely causing the problem.

If you are using an extension cord, the problem is exacerbated.

Cheers,

Bill

compressor wont re start.

by Alan Holmes
(Watford. UK.)

Hi I hope you can help, I have recently replaced the pressure switch and the compressor wont re-start when the pressure drops to 100psi.

It leaks air from the valve in the pressure switch to, the pipe that goes into the swich has a slight air leak, i am about to put a new olive on the pipe to stop the leak and wondered if this could be the cause of the problem? Thanks for you help..

Hello Alan.

Please visit the VALVES page and click the link to both UNLOADER and CHECK VALVE pages and have a read of both.

From what you are saying, I'm not convinced it's a pressure switch issue. I think it has to do with your check valve allowing tank air to bleed off, and maybe your unloader valve not working properly.

Clear up these two issues first, and then post here if you need a bit more help.

Cheers,

Bill

It Won't turn back on once pressures bulds up

From a empty tank you can turn it on and it runs fine but after the auto shuts it off when you relieve the pressure and auto kick it back on the motor wont turn the compressor. If you try to turn the pulley on the compressor it is extremely hard to turn I don't know what is wrong the compressor is new

Kyle, from what you have posted, I suspect that your UNLOADER VALVE is not doing it's job.

Please read the unloader valve information page, check to make sure it is working, and if not, it needs to be fixed.

If the unloader valve is working as it should, then post that info here and we'll dig deeper into your air compressor problem.

Bill
